Marketing your music without being cringe

January 22, 2026 · 6 min read

The reason most independent music doesn't get heard isn't quality — it's reach. The reason most artists hate marketing is that the dominant playbook (lip-sync, trend, repeat) doesn't fit them. There's a quieter way.

Process is content

Filming yourself comping a vocal or chasing a synth patch isn't marketing — it's documentation. People follow the work, not the wave.

One platform, deeply

Pick the platform that matches your medium. Producers do well on Instagram and TikTok. Lyricists do well on Substack and short-form video with captions. Don't dilute across five.

Trade reach, don't beg for it

A 50/50 share with a peer at your level beats any cold post. Build those relationships now, before you need them.

The artists who 'aren't into marketing' usually mean they aren't into someone else's marketing. Find your version. The song deserves it.
