What makes a hook actually hook

December 18, 2025 · 6 min read

A hook isn't the loudest part of a song; it's the part listeners hum on the way to work the next day. Some of that is craft, some of it is luck — but craft tilts the odds. Run a new hook past peers on Songstring and you'll know within an hour whether it's sticky.

Repetition with variation

The same phrase three times in a row is annoying. The same phrase twice plus a tiny twist is a hook. The twist is what your brain anticipates on the fourth listen.

Melodic contour

Hum the melody with no lyric. If the shape alone is memorable, you're golden. If you need the words to remember the line, the melody is doing too little.

Vowel placement

Open vowels (ah, oh, ay) on the highest notes. Closed vowels (ee, ih) get swallowed up there. Most hooky hooks are accidentally vowel-correct.

Write five hook variations before you commit to one. The first idea is rarely the stickiest — it's just the loudest.
