Building a fanbase from zero
September 10, 2025 · 7 min read
Algorithms reward existing momentum. To start from zero you need rooms — physical or digital — where the same humans hear from you regularly enough to care. Peer-feedback platforms like Songstring count as rooms, and they're some of the easiest to walk into.
Show up in the same rooms weekly
A Discord, a forum, a feedback platform, a small local open mic. Pick three. Show up every week for six months. By month four people will know your name.
Give before you ask
Leave thoughtful feedback on 20 songs before you post your own. Pay for one song you love from a peer instead of asking for a stream. The economy of being known runs on generosity.
100 real fans takes about a year of consistent effort. There is no shortcut. The shortcut people sell you is itself the shortcut.
Trade feedback on Songstring.
A community of songwriters and producers swapping honest, tag-based notes on each other's tracks. Free, no labels, no curators — just peers.
