AI tools for musicians: useful, overrated, dangerous
March 8, 2025 · 7 min read
AI in music is moving fast enough that any specific tool list is stale by the time it publishes. The categories aren't. Here's how to think about which AI tools deserve a place in your workflow.
Useful: assistive tools
Stem separation, transcription, lyric brainstorming, mastering reference. These shorten the boring parts of the job. Use them freely.
Overrated: full-song generators
They make convincing 30 seconds and unconvincing 3 minutes. The bridge always exposes them. As a starting point, fine. As a finished song, no.
Dangerous: voice cloning and trained-on-X models
If the tool was trained on copyrighted recordings without licenses, you're carrying the legal risk when you release. Read the training-data disclosure or skip it.
AI is a power tool. Used surgically, it speeds you up. Used as the whole producer, it makes generic music nobody remembers.
