Building a home studio on a $500 budget

January 9, 2026 · 6 min read

Gear isn't the bottleneck. Taste is. But if you're starting from nothing, here's how to spend $500 so the gear never becomes the excuse.

Interface and headphones

A 2-in/2-out class-compliant interface (~$120) and a pair of closed-back monitoring headphones (~$130) will get you further than any plugin bundle.

One good mic

A large-diaphragm condenser in the $130–180 range records vocals, acoustic guitar, and room ambience. Don't buy three mediocre mics; buy one decent one.

Treatment, not absorption

Two moving blankets in an L behind the mic kills 80% of room reflections for $40. Foam tiles do less and look worse.

Buy the cheapest version of everything you need now. Upgrade only the piece that becomes the bottleneck. Most of them never do.
