Song arrangement: keeping listeners past 30 seconds
March 22, 2025 · 6 min read
Streaming pays after 30 seconds. Listeners decide in about 10. Your arrangement's first half-minute is doing more work than the rest of the song combined.
Lead with a hook fragment
Drop a chopped piece of the chorus melody, the hook lyric, or the main synth line in the first 4 bars. Don't make listeners wait to find out what kind of song this is.
Get the vocal in fast
Most successful pop and indie tracks have a human voice within 15 seconds. Voice is the strongest 'this is for me' signal a listener has.
Promise the chorus early
Even before the first chorus lands, the verse should hint at it — a chord, a rhythmic figure, a melodic shape. Anticipation is the engine of retention.
Test the first 30 seconds with strangers. If their eyebrow doesn't raise, the song hasn't started yet.
