Low-end cleanup: stop the mud before it starts
December 4, 2025 · 7 min read
Muddy mixes are almost always a low-mid problem, not a low problem. High-passing everything just makes the mix thin without fixing the build-up at 200–400 Hz.
Find the offender first
Sweep a narrow boost across 200–500 Hz on each element in solo. The one that makes you wince is the one taking up room you don't have.
Sidechain low-end, not just kick and bass
A gentle low-band sidechain from kick to pads and Rhodes keeps the bottom octave from blooming when the beat hits.
Mono below 120 Hz
Stereo information below 120 Hz translates poorly to club systems and phone speakers. Mono it. The kick locks; the bass tightens.
Low end is real estate. Decide who lives there before you start building.
