How to handle bad feedback without spiraling

June 2, 2025 · 6 min read

Trade enough feedback and you'll get a comment that lands like a punch. That's part of the deal — but the skill is sorting signal from noise without letting the noise stop the work. Peers on Songstring will tell you both the brilliant and the unhelpful; learning to tell the difference is its own muscle.

The 24-hour rule

Don't respond, don't re-read, don't change anything for 24 hours after a piece of feedback that stings. Tomorrow-you reads it more accurately.

Look for the specific bit

Even harsh feedback usually contains one usable specific. Pull that out, throw the tone away. The tone wasn't for you.

Weight by source

Feedback from someone who's solved the same problem you're solving carries weight. Feedback from someone who's never finished a track is data, but not much.

The artists who improve fastest aren't the ones who get the most feedback. They're the ones who metabolize the feedback fastest. That's a practiced skill.
