Drum programming that doesn't sound programmed
May 19, 2025 · 7 min read
Quantized drums on the grid sound like quantized drums on the grid. A few small disturbances are the difference between programmed and played.
Velocity first
Snares, hats, ghost notes — none of them should have the same velocity twice in a row. Even ±5 over a static value brings a kit to life.
Nudge, don't humanize-button
Shift the hats 5–10 ticks late, the snare 1–3 ticks early. Pull the kick slightly forward of the grid. Real drummers all have these biases; the algo doesn't.
Layer one organic element
A single room mic recording, a shaker loop, even a brush of vinyl noise across the kit bus. Real-world imperfection masks the digital seams.
Real drummers don't try to play perfectly. Neither should your programming.
